Biography
Chihiro Otsuka’s artistic practice explores the tension between the measurable and the immeasurable, offering new ways to perceive and articulate the invisible forces that shape our lives. Inspired by East Asian philosophy, she applies imagined systems of measurement to intangible phenomena—time, sound, memory, air—translating them into visual and tactile forms that challenge conventional scales and logic.
Her interdisciplinary approach spans photography, installation, performance, and material experimentation. Chihiro’s works operate as poetic instruments—tools that visualize absence, trace emotional residues, and assign scale to the unquantifiable. By proposing new metrics for the intangible, she questions how we define presence, loss, connection, and perception.
A central aspect of her practice is slowing down perception to make space for the ephemeral, the peripheral, and the nearly forgotten. She frequently employs materials that bear traces of transformation, echoing the impermanence at the core of her investigations.
Rather than capturing fixed truths, Chihiro’s work proposes alternate modes of sensing and understanding. Through these speculative measurements, she offers viewers a contemplative lens for engaging with the subtle, often overlooked dimensions of existence.
